The islands of Agioi Theodoroi are located on the opposite side of the beach of Agia Marina in Chania. The island carries a long history but also has a special ecological character as it hosts the Cretan Kri Kri which is an endangered species. The name of the island comes from the early Christian church of Agios Theodoros, which is destroyed today. Nevertheless, there are some remnants of the church and a small church has been built on the same side.
As for its historical journey, it dates back to the Minoan era when the island was used as an altar. Several centuries later, in 1574, the Venetians built fortresses on the island as protection against any naval attack. Shortly afterwards, in 1645, the Ottomans invaded the island and occupied it until 1699, when it returned to Venetian rule. Of the historical monuments of the island, only ruins remain, however, the magic and the primordial awe of its historicity are pervasive on the island.
